News from Mrs. Carden

Field Trip

As you already know, we will be taking a field trip on Tuesday, March 23rd, to the planetarium located at Plaza Middle School.  It is a wonderful opportunity for students to gain an understanding of the various cycles we find in our world, such as the effects of the earth's rotation and revolution.  We will also investigate the stars and constellations found in the nighttime sky.  Thank you Mrs. Slevin for agreeing to come with us.  I could use one or two more parents to help chaperone our class.  Let me know via email if you are available to help.

Science Lab

Our upcoming science lab will be on Thursday, March 18th, from 12:10-1:10.  Mrs. Coose is still seeking help with this event.  Please let her know if you're able to assist; her email address is listed above.

Picture Day

Individual and group pictures will be taken at school on Wednesday, March 10th.  Remember that group pictures are pre-paid orders only; you will not be able to order them after the 10th.

Parenting Workshop

John B. Dey's gifted department will be holding a parenting workshop in the library from 6:30-7:30 on Thursday, March 11th.

"BINGO!"

PTA Bingo Night will be held at Dey on Friday, March 19th, at 6:30.  Come on out and have fun!

 Curriculum Information

Math: We have begun Hands-On Equations and the kids are hooked!  I knew they would love it as much as I love teaching it.  I am going to teach them 4 more lessons of this, which will put them into level two out of three possible.  They will be more than ready for 4th grade Hands-On Equations and Mrs. Law, the upper grades gifted resource teacher, will be soooo impressed!  I am always so proud to send my third graders onto her!

Science:  This week in science will be spent extending our basic knowledge as we conduct some research on the renewable energy sources: wind, solar, and hydro.  I am excited to bring this topic to the children as it is such a 'real world' problem and will hopefully be authentic and meaningful for them to learn about.  Upon completion of this research, we will create a voicethread, attempting to persuade an audience why our energy source should be used.

Reading:  Number the Stars will come to a close this week as the children learn how the Rosen's escape to Sweden.  Your chidren are deeply engaged in this story and are invested in the Rosen's escape to freedom.  In guided reading we discuss how to extend and clarify our reading.  I love working in small groups with your children and especially love to listen to their growth in reading.  Their fluency is improving greatly since we began reading in September.  As they read at home, please have them read aloud occasionally.

Writing:  I am totally impressed with your child's ability to use the computers!  We have been working all week on publishing our fables into a Word document, complete with special fonts, colors, spacing, and clip art.  It is so exciting to see them becoming proficient in keyboarding and Microsoft applications.  This week, we will concentrate our efforts on non-fictional paragraph writing.
