In math, we learn about an object's perimeter by using straws and twist ties.

We investigate forces by pulling and pushing a partner into a standing position.
Front to front... pretty easy.

Back to back... difficult!

Geoboards and rubber bands are fun to use. We learn that it is possible to have the same perimeter between different shaped rectangles, squares, and other polygons.

Introducing our first simple machine, the lever, by holding our Marshmellow Launch experiment was fun! ... especially afterward when we recorded our process and ate the fluffy treasures. Clean ones of course!

First, put the marshmellow on a ruler, a cd case, or a spoon.
Hit the end and ...

then, watch it fly!

How many differenct ways can you launch the marshmellow into the bucket?
Question: Why is lifting a stack of books considered work, but pushing on a wall is not?

Answer: the scientific definition of work states that there must be two things present... a force AND motion over distance. Above, there is definately force in each example, but the wall is not moving, therefore, pushing on a wall is scientifically NOT work.
A great way to review for our test... a sort on ancient Greece!

Ewwwww... Ooblick!

First, we mixed it. Seems like pretty harmless stuff.

Is it a liquid?
Then we poured it. Still seems okay.
Yes, I think it's a liquid.
Then we moved it around.

Yes, definately a liquid.
Next, we formed it into a ball.

Well, gosh, now I think it's a solid.

We dropped the ball.
It went splat, then 'melted' into a liquidy gunk.

We even tried heating it. Then poked it.

Now what do we think it is?
Messy!!! That's what it is!

But so much fun!

Getting helpful ideas from our friends can make our writing better! We welcome suggestions and comments from classmates during our peer conferences.

Dictionaries and thesauruses are helpful tools to a good writer. We use the thesaurus during our revising stage to find quarter words. Dictionaries are used during editing to check spelling.

It's important to take the time to spell words correctly! Way to go Carden's Cool Kids!

Judy clocks help us become more comfortable with telling time.

Using the thesaurus is a great way to find "quarter words"

We love using "Fancy Nancy" words; they make us sound sooooo fancy and smart!

We're researching all about ancient Greece... learning about its geography, architecture, government, entertainment, argriculture, and its contributions.

Reviewing for our science test by playing
"Inside Outside Circle."

Ask a question to a partner... get an answer. Switch roles. Then rotate to the left or right, repeat.
Game Day in Math

Working with Mrs. Joy to investigate our third grade gifted theme... structures!

We love math... using M & Ms to work on grouping, mathmatical operations, comparing, graphing, and analyzing data!

"Sweet!!" (literally!)

Math is fun when you can leave the room and roam the halls. Look at how we hunt around the school for the many ways we use numbers.

Mrs. Carden's students from last year wrote letters to us. They gave us lots of tips and suggestions on how to be successful this year in third grade. It was fun to share those letters with each other.
